Manuscripts in the Manasija Library

The most precious manuscript heritage preserved at Manasija includes the following manuscripts:

1)

A Service Menaion for September from the second half of the 15th century: 112 of the original 120 folios of this menaion have survived. The book is dated to the second half of the 15th century; the language in which it is written is Serbian Church Slavonic, and the orthography is that of Resava. This menaion also contains several precious later notes, which bear witness to the fate of this book, which was once in the possession of the monks of Mileševa, and also at the monastery of Bođani [SSZN 4256, 4998–4999]. The menaion is written in brown ink, while the headings, initial letters and certain emphasized words are written in cinnabar - red pigment.

2)

A Service Menaion for September from the 16th century. This book is likewise written in Serbian Church Slavonic, in the Resava orthography. Only a fragment of this book, written in brown ink, has survived.

3)

The Book of the Miracles of the Most Holy Theotokos, a copy made by the Manasija hierodeacon Jevrem in 1736. This manuscript book was produced at the Resava monastery during the brief period of liberation from the Turks in the first half of the 18th century. The book came to the monastery of Bođani with the Manasija monks. This book, too, is written in Serbian Church Slavonic, in black and red ink; on 178 folios it contains the Miracles of the Most Holy Theotokos - the work of Agapios the Cretan, that is, Agapios Landos (Αγάπιος Λάνδος, 1580–1656), a Greek poet and Cretan monk whose works were known, popular and translated into Serbian during the 18th and 19th centuries. This book contains the note of the copyist, the Resava monk Jevrem [SSZN 2674], and besides that there are also several later notes in it.

4)

Against the Antichrist, a copy by Arsenije Georgijević from 1780, written at Šanac Siga (present-day Perlez). This book is written in cursive script, in red and black ink, in Church Slavonic. On 197 folios the book sets forth the Church's teaching on the Antichrist.

5)

A Short History of the Church, the work of the priest Petar Vulić, parish priest of Mošorin, from 1810. The book contains 111 folios. The language in which it is written is Russian Church Slavonic, and the script is cursive. This book is written in black ink.
